MESSAGE: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE, 2008

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE

Historically in 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine. In December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights, as part of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on this day, to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN. It also encouraged Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity. The day is commemorated at UN Office at Geneva.

President Yasser Arafat’s death led to the condolence by world leaders. This Day was being observed with a feeling of great loss and sorrow over his death. Every Palestinian should fulfill his dream. They thought of holding an election in January 2005 to begin a new chapter for Palestine. It was time that the Palestinian people were spared the violence. The use of force by Israel, which had led to numerous injuries and deaths as well as to the destruction of land, had to come to an end. The Non-Aligned Movement reaffirmed its call on the State of Israel to cease its actions against innocent civilians and its destruction of homes. The international community must lend its support to this. The impact of the separation wall was overwhelming and threatened the integrity of the future of Palestine. The verdict of the International Court of Justice should be respected by all and in particular by Israel. Kofi Annan once said, “Let us hope that his memory will be an inspiration to the Palestinian people at this difficult time, so that they may remain united and strengthened in their efforts to realize their national aspirations for statehood and self-determination though peaceful means.” The continuing bloodshed and chaos in the Middle East over the past years, only begets violence, and pushes farther away the prospect of a peaceful solution to the conflict. Many expressed their sympathy to the Palestinian people. They hoped that the new Palestinian leadership and the Palestinian people would commit themselves to pursuing their objective peacefully through negotiations. They objected the separation wall constructed by Israel, the situation of human rights throughout the occupied Palestinian territory and the killing of some 4,000 people, many of them women and children. They urged Israel to halt the aggression against the Palestinian people. Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories; League of Arab States; Organization of the Islamic Conference; Non-Aligned Movement; the African Union; non-governmental organizations accredited to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People; Permanent Observer of Palestine, Turkey, Senegal, Tunisia and the Netherlands sent messages of solidarity.
Palestinians faced daily harassment, violence and deprivation. The state of the economy, unless protective measures were taken without delays, poverty was likely to rise further. Food security, health standards, the quality of water and sanitation, and education standards had already deteriorated. The International Court of Justice found the construction of the wall built by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, including in and around East Jerusalem and its associated regime, was contrary to international law and that it severely impeded the exercise by the Palestinian people of their right to self-determination.

President Abbas had been convinced that only brave leaders could achieve peace in the Middle East. After Arafat, the Palestinian people had achieved a smooth transfer of power and now they were more than ever in need of the support of the international community in order to overcome this delicate stage by reconstructing their infrastructure, rebuilding their economy and ensuring their inalienable rights. Abbas said what was needed was mutual respect and building bridges not walls. The Palestinian authorities called on the international community to support their request to put an end to the oppression and colonization of the Palestinian people.

The United Nations has a moral responsibility and an important role to play which had been expressed in many important resolutions, including the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice. The inalienable rights of the Palestinian people would soon be recognized. It is now 60 years of struggle.

We, ifop ask the International Community to do justice for the Palestinian people by recognising them as a Sovereign State. We deeply share in their solidarity with them.

Thank you very much.

God bless all of you!!!

Dr S R Mangang
President, ifop
